Neville Fender is fifteen with Cherokee blood in his veins that he tries to keep hidden. His mother believes him to be a dreamer, one who has powers to predict and plan through dreams. Shirley Sherman is missing. Neville works his way into the rescue effort because of a disturbing dream and soon realizes that the team is being purposefully diverted from the real search area and that Shirley did not wander off -- she was kidnapped. Through the help of a black ex-con and his dream warrior, he is able to work through dangers to rescue the little girt. Neville comes to respect and be proud of his extra sense and his ancestry, but his extraordinary ability does not seem to help him in matters dealing with friendships...and girls.
